Church of England Newspaper: Bishop drops lawsuit against blogger

Read it all here:

The Bishop of the Ontario-based Diocese of Niagara, the Rt. Rev. Michael Bird, has dropped his $400,000 defamation of character lawsuit against David Jenkins, after the conservative blogger agreed to partial payment of the bishop’s legal fees and an apology.  A first of its kind lawsuit that was closely watched by free speech activists….

  1. Surprised about lack of comments, at least publically. I’ve been in US without internet for six weeks and this was news. Glad to see you are still here. So since the Bishop did not recover his expenses (and has no further recourse?) does this fall on the Church or the Bishop personally to make up the shortfall?

      Thanks, me too.

That’s a good question. The other possibility is that Bird’s lawyer took the case on contingency which means he would receive a cut of the takings, whatever they end up being (in this case, 3/4 of the “costs”).

      and has no further recourse?

Correct. the settlement includes the following:

The parties confirm that this settlement is in respect of all claims, causes of action or other liabilities that the plaintiff may have against the defendant up to and including the date of these minutes.
