The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby was last night facing mounting pressure to crack down on clergy who marry their gay partners – as the threat of a split in the Anglican Church grew.
A powerful group of conservative African Archbishops said they were ‘deeply troubled’ by liberal Western attitudes towards homosexuality and that Church of England clerics were flouting a ban on same-sex weddings.
The Archbishops said it was ‘very concerning’ that the ban was being ‘openly disregarded’ and added: ‘We look to the Church of England to give clear leadership as moral confusion about the status of marriage [in England] deepens.’
I’m sure the GAFCON bishops know this already, but looking to the Church of England to provide moral leadership on the nature of marriage is going to be as fruitful as asking a madam to elaborate on the virtues of chastity.
This simply reinforces my posting with respect to the ABC’s failure to take a stand for the Gospel. The posting was “This situation clearly shows why the appointment of the ABC should be completely within the Church with absolutely no requirement for the approval of the civil government. We know the reasoning of the various civil governments as many have already approved same-sex marriage. However, the Scripture is very clear on the subject and homosexuality is clearly a sin – not any worse than any other but still sin – the same as shoplifting, anger, jealousy, etc. All fall within that old nature with which we are all tainted and for which our Saviour died. If the ABC is not prepared to stand under the authority of Scripture, he will fall within the same category as other apostates within the Anglican Communion.
We pray for his enlightenment and courage to stand for the Gospel.
