A couple of hymn suggestions for Earth Day

These come courtesy of links from the Diocese of Niagara:

The Earth is my mother
The earth is my mother
The earth is my mother
She’s good to me
She’s good to me
She gives me everything that I ever need
She gives me everything that I ever need

Food on the table
Food on the table
The clothes I wear
The clothes I wear
The sun and the water…..

The earth is my mother and my best friend, too
The great provider for me and you
The earth is my mother and my best friend, too
The great provider for me and you

Her ways are gentle, her life is strong…..

The earth is my mother and my best friend, too
The great provider for me and you

O Beautiful Gaia
O Beautiful Gaia, O Gaia calling us home,
O beautiful Gaia, calling us on.

Fraîche rosée du matin, O Gaia tu nous appelles
Fraîche rosée du matin, rentrons chez nous.

Soil yielding its harvest, O Gaia calling us home
Soil yielding its harvest, calling us on.

Waves crashing on granite, O Gaia calling us home
Pine bending in windstorm, calling us on.

Loon nesting in marshland, O Gaia calling us home,
Loon nesting in marshland, calling us on.

To consummate the celebration, please place a golden calf on the altar and cavort around the church in abandoned pagan revelry, preferably with no clothes on.

A little like this convulsive capering from Christ Anglican Church, London, Ontario. They still had their clothes on in this bit; God is merciful.

  1. Genesis 1: verse 1: “In the beginning God Created the heavens and the earth.”
You’d think that they’d realise that the author of Psalm 23 did a better job than whatever they are trying to do

  2. I wished I never watched this. Now, I can’t get that image of dancing fat women out of my mind.

More seriously, if that is possible, I never liked the “touch the earth” pagan nonsense that has oozed its way into what was once orthodox Christianty. It all started with clergy agreeing to outdoor weddings with bare-footed bridal parties and such and regressed downward after that. Outdoor weddings in my mind was the start of that slippery slope. Now we are blessing pets during worship. I found it ironic that when that first started, I had just returned from a sabbatical in the Philippines, and on two occasions, I was served dog meat. Tastes a little like pork.

As a pastor, I will not do outdoor weddings. Part of my job is to get people into the church, and to introduce them to the place where often faith begins. Besides, I am a Chritian pastor, not a druid shaman. And my bald white head gets terribly sunburnt without a hat.

I have no problem with people worshipping like those in the video as long as it is very occasional, is done at a time other than when regular worship happens, and the music proclaims Christ. There is nothing wrong with Christian people having fun as long as Christ is the honoured guest.

P.S. I did like the drum solo at the end.

  3. To be fair, the blessing of the animals on St. Francis of Assisi day is a very old tradition – it predates the modern eco movement by a few hundred years.

    • It was stupid then too.

Don’t get me wrong because I love animals. They are very important to me. I can’t live withouth them. I eat their flesh and wear their skins.

  4. I didn’t see anyone in that video I’d consider ‘fat’.

Anyway – even if the music proclaimed Christ I wouldn’t participate in something like that. Why? Because I came to Christ out of Wicca, and that style of worship reminds me of some of the ways neo pagans worship. I guess I’m a ‘weaker sister’ in that regard, I’m sure folks who have had no contact with neopaganism could worship Jesus like that – but I know I couldn’t.

    • After spending so much time in Asia, one of the first things I notice everytime I return back to Canada, is just how fat we are compared to the other 3/4 of the world.

Dancing as a form of worship is very biblical. The Old Testament is full of examples.

Please give me the names of those people who dragged you into the Wicca movement at gun point with you kicking and screaming in protest and I will get them for you. If you joined them exercising your own free will, then get over it.
