Anglican bishop likens global warming to atomic bombing of Hiroshima

Canadian bishop Mark MacDonald reckons the same forces that were responsible for bombing Hiroshima are now at work wreaking climatic havoc.

To the best of my knowledge, MacDonald is not an expert on the Second World War, a nuclear scientist or a climatologist. Nevertheless, he is a bishop so we can expect – even forgive, perhaps – an unending stream of advice on matters of which he is entirely ignorant; since he is an Anglican bishop that would usually include theology.

From here:

The nuclear attack on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945 revealed the brutality and dangerous logic of war, money and power, according to an Indigenous Anglican bishop from Canada.

“That such a thing can make sense in any universe gives insight into what is happening in the world today,” says Bishop Mark MacDonald of the Anglican Church in Canada. “The forces that led to the bombing of Hiroshima are at work now in the destruction of the climate.”

[…..]

“The role of the church today is to confront the destructive gods of greed and power. We Christians need to return to our roots, proclaim the truth of God and challenge these powers,” the bishop states.

I was under the impression that the role of the church is to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

  1. Being a so-called bishop in the ACoC clearly means he can speak about anything but NEVER the Gospel as the ACoC does not believe. Apostasy is the proper label for most, if not all, so-called bishops within the ACoC and that includes the primate. Their motto is to speak up about anything that will divert parishioners from their apostasy.

  2. I think you good people are being a tad harsh. After all, he is only human. I doubt that he comprehends gravity of what he is saying. Speaking of gravity………….the ACOC has none.

  3. Mucho grande kaka de caballo (this is America – speak Spanish!). I wonder if the good cleric has any clue about the predicted 1 million casualties expected had we landed troops on the Japanese mainland; my father would have been one of them, so I have no apology to offer for Hiroshima and Nagasake. Let’s make a deal: don’t bomb Pearl Harbor and rape Asia, and we won’t nuke you.

    He may wish to reconsider his analogy as well, since we did nuke Japan but global warming is an hoax.

  4. In applied Gospel + Genesis 12:3 + Romans chs. 9-11,”indigenous” Jewish “havoc” is going to precede ensuing “climatic havoc” now that the ideologically supine and morally bankrupt P5+ 1 (Germany, even and again!) have courted (covertly initiated by the White House in 2011) then appeased the number one state sponsor of global terror;
    now legalizing, equipping via a lifted arms embargo, and rewarding via massive cash flows of relieved sanctions and Greedy international business, its repeated declared pathway to nuclear terror:
    to be launched against “the Zionist entity” first, then against “the great satan”.
    Where is the justified moral outrage and active protest of the Shoah-silent Churches on this?
    Bemoan as they do August 6,1945;
    universal lamentation, for those who survive, will bemoan even and ever more “the global warming” of July 14, 2015 – signed in Herzl Square in Vienna, Hitler’s first stomping grounds!

      • ‘Parlour Palestine’ is ‘The Lie That Broke Israel’s Back’ ( v.’A7′
        Steve Apfel, August 9, 2015); ‘Palestine’ currently aligning itself with Israel’s would be Iranian genocidal destroyer; as are the ‘Evangelical’ Left, and, therefore, duly rebuked for doing so by ‘Institute For Religion and Democracy”s Mark Tooley, (v.’Christian Post’ July 21, 2105);
        as are both the Vatican and the USCC BIshops, April 4,5, 2015,
        aligning with ‘Palestine’, and supporting the Iran deal.
        On the other + Matthew 25 hand of this, “the sheep” side,
        ‘The International Fellowship of Christians and Jews’ has launched a video campaign urging signing of their petition to stop the Iran deal (v. ‘Jerusalem Post’, August 12, 2015).

  5. I appreciate a good bit of your writing and log on every couple of weeks for a chuckle. While I don’t come here expecting to find charity, I do find this post to be out of place. I know Bp. Mark personally, he and his family are dear friends and I have laboured together with him for the gospel on more than one occasion. He really isn’t far off in his comments above and they clearly weren’t meant to exhaust the gospel, so you really ought to check your hubris and extend to him more charity than you have done here. Bp. Mark is not ashamed of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ…this I know for sure. Moreover, agree with his comments or not, he is a brother in Christ to whom you are bound. Let us not grieve the Holy Spirit but rather make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

    Grace and peace.

    • I appreciate a good bit of your writing

      Thank you.

      He really isn’t far off in his comments above

      You mean he really is an expert on anthropogenic global warming? I had no idea.

      they clearly weren’t meant to exhaust the gospel

      Rest assured, the Gospel wasn’t even slightly tired – or even in evidence at all, as far as I can see.

      you really ought to check your hubris and extend to him more charity

      I’m sure you are right.

      Bp. Mark is not ashamed of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

      Maybe so; like most ACoC bishops, though, he hides it well.
      Can you point to just one article by him that, rather than prattling about global warming, clearly states the Gospel? Something like:

      We are all sinners and deserve God’s wrath.

      God loves us nevertheless, so he sent his Son to bear the punishment for our sin.

      Jesus bore that punishment when he died on the cross.

      He bodily rose from the dead proving that he had overcome death itself.

      We are reconciled to God the Father through Jesus’ sacrifice and have everlasting life through him.
