Michael Coren received into the Anglican Church of Canada

On April 23rd Michael Coren was received into the Anglican Church of Canada at St. James Cathedral, Toronto. On the face of it, this seems a little schizophrenic since it was not too long ago that Catholics were Right. Still, of late, Michael has become increasingly rickety on homosexuality, a wobbliness that will slide much more easily into the doctrineless ACoC than into Roman Catholicism.

  1. Ya know…..if there ever was a reason to leave the ACoC…..if there was any doubt….a reasonably intelligent person just found it. I found Michael Coren to be a pontificating ‘gas bag’. He fit well with the Conservative right ilk within the Roman Catholic Church. Now that he doesn’t have a platform on Sun Media TV, I guess its time to move on. His hurtful comments did nothing to enhance dialogue between differing camps of thought. But then I guess when you are ‘right’…………well, I think you get the rest.
I am sure he will fit well with the moneyed ‘toffee nose’ crowd at the Cathedral.

    • OK, so then why didn’t he go all the way and jump over to the rad-trads if he was so right-wing? Perhaps his being half Jewish would make him hesitate, since he would’ve been as welcome there as Al Sharpton at Westboro Baptist Church. Instead, Coren did a 180-degree turn to Liberalism (vs Christianity), and neither this blurb nor the article from catholicintelligenceblog give any reason therefor.

      • While I understand what you meant about a half-Jew being unwelcome among “rad trads”, you should know that I am a full Jew, raised in Orthodox Judaism, who became a traditional Catholic when I was 18 (I’m now 55). And yes, I eventually became a “rad trad”. It happens.

        • How ever do you stomach that “Talmud Jew” and conspiracy theory libel those people are so infamous for? IMNSHO their behavior challenges their claim to being regenerate – let alone, intelligent.

Also, knowing other Jewish Christians of various Proddie persuasions, it would seem that swimming the Tiber for an Orhtodox Jew would be but exchanging one religion of works-righteousness for another. I mean no personal insult, but an rather curious.

            • Correct me if I’m wrong, but rad trads are those who actuallyy dove off of Peter’s Barque into continuing churches for a number of reasons, although mostly centered around the Novus Ordo mass; eg Most Holy Family Monastery, SSPX, etc. I did not mean those who are beholden to the Tridentine mass but otherwise don’t look under their beds for Jews more than twice a week.

              • Yes, this is true I believe; but ‘coming out’ to parents is also the currently fashionable way for adolescents to shock and grieve them.

                • Yes, I think that it is. As I wrote in my ‘Dialogue with Hugh’, on p. 86 of my book Holy Homosex?, “To have some homosexual feelings, even a major ‘crush’ on someone of the same sex, is part of growing up for nearly everyone. I ask again, where is ‘gayness’ located? Would an autopsy have revealed it?”

                • In your opinion, where is it? IMHO, even if there were some genetic predisposition, biology is not as fatalistically determinant as once believed; ie genetic predisposition meets environmental challenge, epigenetics, etc. Even so, the fact that sin is hard-wired is neither a surprise or an excuse.

                • Mine is a rhetorical question, first posed at least twenty years ago. Of course, being a state of mind or emotion, “gayness” as such is physically located nowhere, and no autopsy will show it. In extremely rare cases there may be a genetic predisposition, which is by no means predetermination. We still hold people responsible for what they do with their innate tendencies. Otherwise we would have different laws about criminal violence for the two sexes!

That there are brain changes effected by experience is a separate matter.

                • I agree with holding people accountable, but even having predispositions doesn’t excuse sin. For example, there is a predisposition to disbetes, but that doesn’t force poeple to be fat and lazy; ie they are still accountable for playing the genetic ahnd dealt. As for homosexuality, I find the point moot, as sin is sin, and there is no more drive for than for adultery, kleptomania, or other faux diseases packing DSM 6.

              • We straight people just get forgiven way more easily, and for serial offenses as well. I’m waiting for the tidal wave of articles on this blog about married Christians who cheat on their partners. “Love the sinner, hate the sin, ofr course, but cheating on your wife, for heaven’s sake! That’s a sin in itself, and doubly a sin because you broke a contract you consciously entered into.”

But no, homosexuals, even in committed, faithful relationships, _that’s_ a problem.

                • Vincent,
If – or perhaps I should say “when” – the ACoC decides to offer a blessing liturgy for married Christians who cheat on their partners, I promise I will complain about it.

  2. I wonder if Michael Coren is aware of the “Family Compact” that runs the Diocese of Toronto (Anglican). I’m intensely interested in knowing how his latest transformation took place. I know M.C. has been around the block denomination-wise and I additionally wonder what he’ll end-up as I cannot imagine him staying long with the A.C.of C.–unless of course, he gets a job working for the C.B.C. which in my mind will indicate he’s been adopted by the Family Compact.

  3. He’s kinda wacky- so he will fit in well at the ACoC-hope he’s not looking for spiritual fulfilment cause….it ain’t here no more

  4. Just a thought here folks……now that the current Bishop of Rome, a true Pastor for people of all faiths is ‘in the Chair’, dear Mikey senses a possible change coming . He doesn’t support any hint of conciliation from an institution that has propounded for generations that guilt is the only motivator needed for success. There is a fresh tone appearing on the horizon. No real dogma or doctrinal changes………..yet.

  6. Does the Anglican Communion receive converts? In England you simply become an Anglican by turning up to one of their churches.

    • I think it’s a case of a Roman Catholic Christian who has been confirmed in the RC church being received rather re-confirmed into the Anglican Church.

At one time in the Anglican Church (in Canada, at least), a person had to be confirmed in order to receive Communion; now baptism is sufficient in most parishes.

Having been received into the ACoC, I believe MC would no longer be permitted to take Communion in an RC church.

      • I’ve been received into the ACC. My children are baptised Anglicans. They go to a Catholic school. They are active in the pastoral movement of the school.

The priest who officiates at Mass at the school chapel every Sunday told us all not to be silly, and he gives us communion.

        • A Catholic priest encouraging Anglican Anglicans to come to Catholic Mass is fine.

A Catholic priest encouraging Anglicans to receive Communion is taking it upon himself to play pope, unless you and your kids are in repeated danger of death at their school (possible) or in certain rare cases, if the nearest Anglican church is five zillion miles away or all Christians are being persecuted continually.

(That would also mean any sin would fall upon the Catholic priest, since he’s supposed to know this stuff and non-Catholics aren’t.)

Of course, if you’re Anglican Use Catholics of the Ordinariate, obviously you can receive Communion, and indeed it would be silly to refrain unless you haven’t fasted, you’re not in a state of grace, or you aren’t correctly disposed. In that case, I’m sure you and your kids also go to Confession frequently, and as Catholics.

    • I suspect it’s because Mr Coren has some kind of profile and this makes a good photo-op.
I’m amazed at the number of people who change their position on homosexuality because a family member has, “come out.” Sometimes real love means telling someone you care about they’re on the wrong path. You don’t have to agree with them, or even approve of their behaviour to continue to love them.

  7. I have to feel sorry for Micheal. He showed up for an event at an AcoC facility. Now he’s most likely on their mailing list.

  8. The ACoC has virtually anyone who walks thru their doors on a mailing list of some sort.
Its called ‘enhancing the numbers’. R.C’s have been doing it for decades.

  9. To our learned friend Dr. Turner there is no homosexual/lesbian gene that I am aware of.
May I respectfully offer that is maybe a case of nurture rather than nature.
    Just a thought.

  10. Not that I am an expert on these matters but from studies that I have read, homosexual men, even in a committed relationship, tend to wander. Same sex female’s on the other hand are less so inclined. In short, their commitment tends to be for life.
